The Transition from Anatta to Emptiness · Part 1

The Disease of Relentless Negation & The Principle of Formation

True freedom of mind cannot be achieved without understanding why the phenomenal world appears so undeniably real, concrete, stable, objective, and causally efficacious. As long as the formation of phenomenal reality remains opaque, a subtle cognitive obscuration persists. Even clear insight into emptiness cannot by itself resolve this obscuration if the question of formation remains unanswered. It is here that a subtle danger arises among practitioners of emptiness—a peril that is seldom discussed.

The danger lies not in the failure to negate intrinsic existence, nor in the persistence of obvious metaphysical beliefs. Rather, it is found in the mistaken assumption that once every essence has been analytically dismantled, the work of wisdom is complete. Yet the deconstruction of essence, however indispensable, does not by itself explain the formation of phenomenal reality. In this context, formation does not denote the coming-into-existence of a substantial world, but rather the intelligibility of how a world empty of intrinsic existence nevertheless appears as the vivid, stable, objective, causally efficacious, and conventionally valid reality of everyday experience. The mistake is to assume that nothing remains to be understood once nothing remains to be negated. This is the disease of relentless negation.

The Epistemological Bypass and the Four Critical Insights

At this juncture, an epistemological bypass arises when the cessation of conceptual proliferation is mistaken for the completion of wisdom. Closing this gap requires carrying negation through four critical insights. Each is taken in turn below, and the table that follows summarizes them.

The first insight is that emptiness and appearance were never two. Relentless negation tends to treat appearance as whatever is left over once emptiness has been seen—a residue tolerated for practical purposes. But negation removes only the premise that appearance needed an essence in order to appear. When that premise falls, nothing is subtracted from the appearing. The red of the flower and the ring of the bell are empty and vivid at once, and always were.

The second is that intrinsic causal power explains nothing. To say that a seed grows because it has the power to grow is to say that it grows because it grows; the 'power' adds a name, not an explanation. Functioning is described by seed, soil, water and warmth met together, without a producer standing inside any of them. No power is found in any of them from its own side; the capacity, designated in dependence, works.

The third is that substrates explain nothing either. When intrinsic power is abandoned, the mind reaches for something underneath to hold the regularities together—a field, matter, consciousness. But a substrate only moves the question down a level: why does the field behave so? Conditionality needs no foundation. The coherence of conditions is simply what the absence of intrinsic nature looks like when it is seen at work.

The fourth is beyond cause and effect, correctly understood. It does not mean that appearances spring from an uncaused source, nor that conditions are suspended. It means beyond intrinsic causes: the demand for an ontological 'why' behind the springing-forth is retired, and spontaneous presence (lhun grub) names nothing more than appearing that owes its completeness to nothing hidden.

Carried through these four insights, negation turns round. The very formation of appearances—their vividness, their stability, their reliability in use—stops looking like an obstacle to emptiness and becomes its clearest demonstration. A thing that existed from its own side could not form, could not depend, and could not change with its conditions. That the world forms at all, and so precisely, is what shows it to be empty. This is why the cure for relentless negation is not less analysis but the question of formation, which the next section takes up.

Insight

Substantialist Assumption Dismantled

Resolution & Realization

1. Unity of Emptiness & Appearance

Appearances require intrinsic essence to appear.

Negation removes the premise that essence was required. Appearances have always been empty and vivid simultaneously.

2. Intrinsic Causal Power Explains Nothing

Functioning requires an intrinsic productive force (e.g., 'seed grows due to growth power').

Intrinsic causal power is a mere tautology. Functioning is described by regularities designated together, without an intrinsic producer.

3. Substrates Explain Nothing

Coherent conditions require a deeper substrate (field, matter, consciousness).

Positing a substrate merely relocates the mystery. Conditionality is precisely what the absence of intrinsic nature looks like.

4. Beyond Cause & Effect

The springing-forth of reality requires an ontological 'why'.

'Beyond cause and effect' means beyond intrinsic causes. Essence is never needed for valid functioning; spontaneous presence (lhun grub) is this appearing, complete with no ontological anchor and nothing operating it.

The Triad of Formation & The Rehabilitation of Conventionality

Dependent arising must explain formation; it must articulate how a world completely empty of intrinsic existence nevertheless appears exactly as the only world ever known—a world that is vivid, stable, objective, causally efficacious, and conventionally valid. The entirety of phenomenal reality is fully accounted for without appealing to metaphysical substance, through three inseparable aspects, none prior to the others:

  • 1. Luminous Clarity: Without manifestation, there is nothing to perceive or investigate. Luminous clarity is simply the self-presenting character of appearance itself, requiring no hidden ground.

  • 2. Stable Causal Efficacy: Manifestation is designated together with stable regularities. Fire consistently burns, water wets, gravity attracts, and language communicates. Science succeeds because these regularities remain dependable.

  • 3. Dependent Designation: Distinctions are conventionally meaningful, designated together with the manifestation and efficacy they distinguish. Mountains, persons, languages, economies, atoms, and galaxies emerge as valid designations.

When the explanatory demand for ontology is relinquished, explanations within convention are the only ones needed. We see the flourishing dependent arising of ethics, medicine, money, science, psychology, astronomy, calendars, and religions in all their diversities precisely because dependent arising is empty. Conventional validity is not grounded in matching an intrinsic ontology; it is licensed by successful dependent functioning within relations that are themselves designated. By dropping the requirement for a 'Why' of ontology, human culture, science, and ethics are fully rehabilitated as the vivid, unobstructed display of an empty, dependently arisen world.
